Electronics Recycling

Posted by Ben on September 26th, 2008

Wilmington NC has great record for electronics recycling. Not only has Wilmington NC lead the nation in the “big switch” to digital TV signal, but tomorrow Saturday September 27 you can drop off pretty much any old electronics that has a chord and save our landfills from toxic chemicals. Do the right thing and don’t just through them away. Tomorrow’s drop off is from 9:00 am until 2:00 PM at the Wal-Mart store at 5226 Sigmon Road, just off Market Street.

If you can’t make it to this event, New Hanover County will collect obsolete electronics and other household hazardous waste on Saturday, October 25 from 9:00 am until 2:00 PM at the New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive, between South College Road and Eastwood Road.

Volunteers are also needed for the October 25 collection day.

Contact Jennifer O’Keefe, 798-4404 or Lynn Bestul, 798-4410 to volunteer your time and keep hazardous wastes out of our landfill.  Read more and see video at WECT.

The Glorious Oyster

Oysters at Heck of a Peck Wilmington NC

Author Hector Bolitho wrote in ‘The Glorious Oyster’ (1929), “Oysters are the most tender and delicate of all seafoods. They stay in bed all day and night. They never work or take exercise, are stupendous drinkers, and wait for their meals to come to them.” I love seafood and especially oysters. I love them raw and cold maybe with a little horseradish cocktail sauce or steamed with butter.

The photo above is two dozen raw oysters on the half shell.  I get my oyster fix at Wilmington’s only full service Oyster Bar Heck of a Peck. North Carolina has instituted an oyster recycling program and Bob Rivenbark (Owner - Heck of a Peck) recycles the restaurant’s used oysters at no personal profit. The recycling of oyster shells is wonderful for the whole underwater ecosystem (read more).
