Mason’s Haunt

Posted by Ben on July 21st, 2008

Mason's Haunt - Chocolate Cookie Cheesecake

What happens when a world class chef and a master restaurant manager get together? The answer is Mason’s Haunt. Chef & proprietor David Herring and manager Jim Wright are definitely doing it right. They were kind enough to let me roam around the kitchen with them - watch the short video below. All I can say is that if I could give five stars - Mason’s Haunt would get them.

Above is chocolate chip cookie cheesecake (as seen in the video below). Does your birthday boy or girl have a favorite cookie or candy bar? Dave can make you a special cheesecake with a little notice. Mason’s Haunt Restaurant & Spirits is located at 3317 Masonboro Loop Road Wilmington NC. Call them at 910-796-9992. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday - Saturday and now with a new Sunday brunch!

Are you SURFWISE?

Posted by Ben on July 15th, 2008

The Paskowitz family home: camper van on the beach with nightly sunsets (family photo) Doug Pray’s documentary SURFWISE posts an intriguing question: just what is the true American dream? By 1956, Paskowitz was successfully rising in the worlds of medicine, sports and politics. He had easily conquered one version the American success story, but his idea of the “dream” found its realization in the then, relatively small nomadic community of surfing.

SURFWISE follows 85-year-old surfer “Doc” Paskowitz, his wife, and their nine kids in their camper (see inset).

Playing now in select theaters, HDNet VOD (Time Warner HD-on demand) and local art theaters.

American Oystercatcher

American Oystercatcher

I love seafood and any bird that specializes in feeding on oysters, clams, and mussels can’t be all bad. I saw the reddish-orange beak about 300 feet away and walked as close as I could get to snap this picture of one of a pair of American Oystercatchers. “The northernmost breeding populations, from Massachusetts to Virginia, are migratory, and appear to spend the winter in the southeastern United States. A number of Audubon Important Bird Areas (IBAs) provide critical nesting, migratory, and wintering habitat for American Oystercatchers. These IBAs include North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras National Seashore IBA which supports 30 nesting pairs” according to Audubon.org.
