a Lonesome Dove

a Lonesome Dove

A lonely white dove arrived 2 days ago. He / she flew a foot from us while we sat on the porch and tried to fly in the door. We think he is somewhat domesticated and perhaps used for a wedding or other celebration and now is free. Thanks to Steve.

August Nights

I was searching old photos from last year looking for something unrelated when I ran across this August Night. under a 93% full moon.

When I start painting, this will be my first. I love it!

Slice of Mushroom

Slice of Mushroom

These strangely colored mushrooms magically appeared with these intense hues of reds, yellows and everything in between. They remain this color for a couple of days until the 90+ degree heat turns them brown. Can you name this mushroom type?

Meet Wilma

Meet Wilma

Wilma is an American Bald Eagle and currently a resident at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. She was wounded by gunshot somewhere out west, but now is under special care.

The American Bald Eagle has been taken off the endangered and threatened lists as of last month but is still protected by the Bald Eagle Act (so it is still illegal to own one of their feathers, much less a bird). ~ thanks to Libba!

Masonboro Barn Swallows

Posted by Ben on August 13th, 2007

What You Lookin' At?

On a beautiful breezy April day about 40 barn swallows (who also have unique purple martin coloring) flew figure eights just overhead at speeds up to 60mph devouring flying bugs. After about 10 minutes of watching them speed around, I looked to my left and a pair of friendly red robins that are usually doing their hunting and pecking routine, were stopped and gazing up as well. Then, I looked further down by the water, where about 12 wild Canada Geese would have normally been eating grass and they too were all at attention staring - just staring at the amazing torpedo-like speed of these new arrivals. Notice when you click on the image above, the other shot shows one swallow hitting the breaks (so to speak) in mid-air to avoid a collision with his/her compadre. (note: I took over 100 pictures with not a bird in a frame, but gleaned a small series).
